Travel Basketball Philosophy

For those players desiring a more competitive level of play, a traveling league is offered. Traveling basketball is for those individuals who exhibit a higher commitment to developing their basketball skills while competing at a higher level. It requires greater commitment, in that each participant is expected to attend all practices and weekend tournaments. The goal is for continuous improvement of both the team and individual skill sets. Traveling basketball is offered in grades 4 through 8. Traveling basketball brings more focus on competition and skill development. Metro teams are formed of our best players to compete with the best players from other communities in the area. Two to four teams will be formed per grade with an A-B-C format with eight to ten players per team. Teams are formed according to age guidelines set by Minnesota Youth Athletic Services. The boys and girls varsity basketball coaches conduct tryouts and are responsible for team placement.

In-house Basketball Philosophy

In-house basketball opportunities are offered for children in grades 1 through 8. Teams are formed at random or through a draft. Teams will be formed with talent as evenly spread as possible.

In grades 1-3, we focus on developing skills with drills on dribbling, passing, shooting, defense and rebounding.

A structured league is played at most levels. All players participate equally. Teams are selected through a random draft. Common t-shirts give a sense of community and promote good sportsmanship.

In grades 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 In-house, we focus on the value of teamwork.

Teams are selected by player evaluations and draft process. Balancing competition is the priority in selecting teams. Teams typically have 1 practice and 1 game per week. Playing time is shared during the games and we limit roster size to 10 players. Every participant receives a trophy for his or her efforts throughout the year.
